If you love nothing more that traipsing around the mountains, you've seen them everywhere... the lovely purplish blue gentians. They are one of the iconic flowers of the Alps in particular and incorporated into local liqueur. And it was traditionnally used to produced natural dyes too.
Isn't there something captivating about botanical illustration? When a master captures the very essence of the flower so well that you can feel the velvetness of the petals, the texture of the leaves and smell the perfume as if it were real? Redouté is undoubtedly such a master.
This lovely flowers poster is a reproduction of a painting by famous 19th century French naturalist Pierre-Joseph Redouté. It shows a bunch of dark purplish blue gentians (gentiana acaulis), with a lovely little fluttreing butterfly hovering above.
This delicate piece of vintage botanical art comes from a luxury 1986 edition of Redouté's flowers and fruits, printed on thick art paper. The page is printed with the French name of the flower Lilas at the bottom of the page.
